⭐️ Korean Grammar 136: N-이냐고 하다/-냐고 하다 (이냐고 묻다/냐고 묻다)

“나나 씨는 학생이냐고 물어봤어요..”

1. Short Conversation

미소: 지안 씨, 나나 씨는 학생이에요?

      ⥥⇓

지안: 나나 씨, 미소 씨가 학생이냐고 물어봤어요.

나나: 네, 저는 학생이에요. 대학교에서 한국어를 배우고 있어요.

➔ The grammar we're going to learn today is '학생이냐고 물어 봤어요.'

(in English)

Miso: Jian, is Nana a student?

     ⥥⇓

Jian: Nana, Miso asks me if you are a student.

Nana: Yes, I am a student. I study Korean at the university.

2. Usage

- Indirect quotation: this expression is used when the speaker quotes another person's question indirectly.

- ‘-이냐고 하다/냐고 하다’ is used when a quoted sentence is an interrogative sentence. And it is used after a noun by deleting '이다' from the 'Noun+이다' form.

- So, it is used to quote a sentence that is an interrogative sentence, ending with a noun and the present tense.

- And instead of the verb ‘하다’, you can also use ‘묻다, 질문하다, 말하다.’

3. Example Sentences: N-이냐고 하다/-냐고 하다 (noun, present, interrogative)

✎ 미소: “나나 씨는 학생이에요?” (→ noun, present, interrogative)

         (Is Nana a student?)

→ Indirect quotation: 미소 씨가 나나 씨는 학생이냐고 물어봤어요. (학생 + 이냐고 묻다)

- When you look at this sentence, it ends with the noun, the point of view is in the present, and it is an interrogative sentence.

- If you want to quote indirectly, you can add '이냐고 하다' after the noun '학생.'

- And when writing, delete the double quotation marks.

- Then you can say ‘미소 씨가 나나 씨는 학생이냐고 물어봤어요.’

- Here ‘학생이냐고 물어 봤어요' is a combination of the noun 학생 and '이냐고 묻다'.

- If the sentence you want to quote ends with a noun, is in the present tense, and is an interrogative sentence, you can use '-이냐고 하다' after a noun.

✎ 미소: “나나 씨는 오늘 휴가예요?” (→ 명사, 현재, 의문문)

         (Is Nana on vacation today?)

→  Indirect quotation: 미소 씨가 나나 씨는 오늘 휴가냐고 물어봤어요. (휴가 + 냐고 묻다)

- When you look at this sentence, it ends with the noun, the point of view is in the present, and it is an interrogative sentence.

- If you want to quote indirectly, you can add '냐고 하다' after the noun '휴가.'

- And when you quote indirectly and write, remove quotation marks.

- Then you can say ‘미소 씨가 나나 씨는 오늘 휴가냐고 물어봤어요.

- Here ‘휴가냐고 물어 봤어요' is a combination of the noun 휴가 and '냐고 하다.’

- If the sentence you want to quote ends with a noun, is in the present tense, and is an interrogative sentence, you can say it by combining '냐고 하다' after the noun.

4. Combination Information

- It attaches after a noun.

(1) Final Consonant O :-이냐고 하다

- When the preceding noun has the final consonant, '-이냐고 하다' is used.

- 학생 + 이냐고 하다 → 학생이냐고 하다

- When you look at '학생', there is the final consonant ‘ㄱ.’

- Then '-이냐고 하다' is used after that.

- So you can say '학생이냐고 하다.’

- 도서관 + 이냐고 하다 → 도서관이냐고 하다

- When you look at the noun '도서관', there is the final consonant ‘ㄴ.’

- Then '-이냐고 하다' is used after that.

- So you can say '도서관이냐고 하다.’

※ when speaking Noun (Final Consonant O) -냐고 하다 (X)

- ‘이냐고 하다’ after a noun with a consonant is not shortened '냐고 하다.'

- So you cannot say ‘학생냐고 하다’, 도서관냐고 하다’ which are wrong.

- If there is a final consonant, only '이냐고 하다' is used.

- 학생 + 냐고 하다 → 학생냐고 하다 (X)

- 도서관 + 냐고 하다 → 도서관냐고 하다 (X)

(2) Final Consonant X :-냐고 하다

- When the preceding noun does not have the final consonant, '-냐고 하다' is used.

- 가수 + 냐고 하다 → 가수냐고 하다

- When you look at '가수', there is no final consonant.

- Then '-냐고 하다' is used after that.

- So you can say ‘가수냐고 하다.'

- 기숙사 + 냐고 하다 → 기숙사냐고 하다

- When you look at '기숙사', there is no final consonant.

- Then '-냐고 하다' is used after that.

- So you can say '기숙사냐고 하다’.

→ 여기가 시청역이냐고 물어봤어요. (시청역 + 이냐고 묻다)
