1. A short conversation & Pronunciation

V-은 후에/ㄴ 후에

- 미소: 나나 씨, 올해 졸업하지요? 나나 씨는 졸업한 후에 뭐 할 거예요?
            (Nana, are you graduating this year? What will you do after graduation?)

- 나나: 저는 가능하면 졸업한 후에 한국에서 취업하고 싶어요.
            (If possible, I would like to get a job in Korea after graduation.)

The grammar we're going to learn today is '졸업한 후에.'

2. Usage

V-은 후에/ㄴ 후에

► '은/ㄴ 후에' attaches after a verb stem.

► 은/ㄴ (adnominal suffix) + 후 (noun) + 에 (particle)

- It is a combination of the adnominal suffix '은', the noun '후', and the particle '에.'

- When ‘은/ㄴ’ is used after a verb, it means either 'an action has happened in the past or ‘an action has been completed.'

-And the noun '후' means 'after' or 'next.'

► As one expression, it is used to indicate that one does a certain act mentioned in the preceding statement and a while later, does another thing.

► 'V-은/ㄴ 후에' is opposite of '-기 전에' which we learned in the previous lesson.

- Example Sentences

✎ 저는 졸업한 후에 한국에서 취업하고 싶어요. (졸업하다 + ㄴ 후에)
        (After graduating, I want to get a job in Korea.)

V-은 후에/ㄴ 후에

- Here, '졸업한 후에' is a combination of the verb '졸업하다 and 'ㄴ 후에.'

- What do you do first?

- 졸업을 해요. (I graduate.) → 졸업을 한 후에 (After I graduate) → 취업하고 싶어요. (I'd like to get a job)

- When talking about the action that comes in front of it and the action that follows in time, use '-ㄴ 후에' after the preceding verb.

✎ 밥을 먹은 후에 이를 닦아요. (먹다 + 은 후에)
        (After eating, I brush my teeth.)

V-은 후에/ㄴ 후에

- Here,'먹은 후에' is a combination of the verb '먹다' and '-은 후에'

- What do you do first?

- 밥을 먹어요. (I eat a meal.) → 밥을 먹은 후에 (After I eat a meal) → 이를 닦아요. (I brush my teeth.)

- When talking about the action that comes in front of it and the action that follows in time, use '-은 후에' after the preceding verb.

3. Combination Information

- It attaches after a verb stem.

- When a verb stem has the final consonant, '-은 후에' is used.

(1) 받침 O: -은 후에

- 먹다 + 은 후에 → 먹은 후에

- 읽다 + 은 후에 → 읽은 후에

- When a verb stem does not have the final consonant, '-ㄴ 후에' is used.

(2) 받침 X: -ㄴ 후에

- 가다 + ㄴ 후에 → 간 후에

- 오다 + ㄴ 후에 → 온 후에

- When a verb stem ends with the final consonant ‘ㄹ’, delete ‘ㄹ’ and attach ‘-ㄴ 후에’.

(3) 받침 ㄹ: ㄹ 탈락 + -ㄴ 후에

- 만들다 (ㄹ 탈락) + ㄴ 후에 → 만든 후에

- 놀다 (ㄹ 탈락) + ㄴ 후에 → 논 후에

V-은 후에/ㄴ 후에

4. Practice 

✎ 저는 퇴근한 후에 친구를 만나기로 했어요. (퇴근하다 + ㄴ 후에)
        (After work, I'm going to meet my friend.)

✎ 책을 다 읽은 후에 도서관에 반납하세요. (읽다 + 은 후에)
        (After you finish reading the book, return it to the library.)

✎ 여권을 만든 후에 비행기표를 사요. (만들다 (ㄹ 탈락) + ㄴ 후에)
        (After making a passport, I buy an airplane ticket.)

- 미소: 나나 씨, 수업 끝난 후에 뭐 할 거예요? 약속 있어요?
            (Nana, what are you going to do after class? Do you have any plans?)

- 나나: 네, 수업이 끝난 후에 친구와 밥 먹기로 했어요. 밥을 먹은 후에 집에 갈 거예요.
            (Yes, after class, I'm going to eat with my friend. After eating, I will go home.)

→ 끝난 후에 (끝나다 + ㄴ 후에)

→ 먹은 후에 (먹다 + 은 후에)
