- 나나: 제가 맛집을 아는데, 영화 보고 나서 밥 먹으러 갈까요?
(I know a famous restaurant. Shall we go to have a meal after watching a movie?)
- 미소: 좋아요.
(That sounds good.)
그러면 내일 영화 보고 나서 밥 먹으로 가요.
(Then let's go to have a meal after watching a movie.)

- '-고 나서' attaches after a verb stem.
- -고 나서 indicates that one action is finished or completed and another action is started.
Let's look at example sentences.
✎ '우리 영화를 보고 나서 밥을 먹어요.'
(Let's go to have a meal after watching a movie.)
⇨ 영화를 봐요.🎬 (We watch a movie.) And the action is finished.
⇨ And then, 밥을 먹어요. 🍔🍝🍜🍖
⇨ The first action is finished and then do the next action chronologically. And you want to connect two sentences in one sentence.
⇨ In this case, you can connect them by using '고 나서'.
⇨ You can say '우리 영화를 보고 나서 밥을 먹어요.'

⇨ 문제를 풀어요.❔ (We solve the problem.) And the action is finished.

3.1. A verb stem with/without a final consonant: -고 나서
a verb stem with/without a final consonant + 고 나서 |
- Whether a verb stem has the final consonant or not, '고 나서' is used.
- 풀다 (to solve) + 고 나서 ➝ 풀고 나서
- When you remove '다', there is the final consonant.
- Add '고 나서'
- So it becomes '풀고 나서.'
- 보다 (to watch) + 고 나서 ➝ 보고 나서
- When you remove '다', there is no final consonant.
- Add '고 나서'
- So it becomes '보고 나서.'

4. V고 나서 ≑ V고
'Verb-고 나서' and 'Verb-고' that is used to connect two actions in chronological order, their meanings are similar in some cases.
Let's look at an example.
⇨ The first sentence is connected using '고 나서 ' after '풀다'.
✎ 문제를 풀고 정답을 알아봅시다.
(Let's find out the answer after solving the problem.)
⇨ The second sentence is connected using '고' after '풀다.'
⇨ Their meanings are similar. But the first sentence indicates the completion of the preceding action clearly.

- 손을 씻고 나서 밥을 먹어요.
(I wash my hands and then I eat.) - '씻고 나서' is a combination of the verb '씻다 (to wash)' and '고 나서'.
- 문제를 다 듣고 나서 푸세요.
(Please listen to the questions and then solve them.) - '듣고 나서' is a combination of the verb '듣다 (to listen)' and '고 나서'

- '끝내고 나서' is the combination of the verb '끝내다 (to finish/complete) and '고 나서.'
- '하고 나서' is a combination of the verb '하다 (to do)' and '고 나서'.
