In this lesson, we're going to learn the Korean alphabets '한글 (Hangeul)'.
This is the first class of 한글, so let's look at Hangeul briefly and the principle of vowel formation. Then, we're going to learn ' 8 single vowels'.

ㄱ. Hangeul (한글)

  • 한글 consists of 21 vowels and 19 consonants.

    • 21 vowels: ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅗ, ㅜ, ㅒ, ㅔ, ㅡ, ㅣ, ㅑ, ㅕ, ㅛ, ㅠ, ㅒ, ㅖ, ㅘ, ㅙ, ㅚ, ㅞ, ㅝ, ㅟ, ㅢ

  • When you write 한글, you should group the letters together.

  • In terms of the direction, you should write left to right, and up to bottom.

ㄴ. The principle of formation of vowels

  • The Korean vowels are based on the combination of three symbols:
     ● (sky)ㅡ (the earth), andㅣ(human)

ㄷ. Vowel types

  • The Korean vowels can be divided into 2. 
  • Depending on the pronunciation, we can divide them into 8 single vowels (monophthong) and 13 double vowels (diphthong).

  •  8 single vowels (monophthong): ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅗ, ㅜ, ㅐ, ㅔ
  • 13 double vowels (diphthong)
    • ㅑ, ㅕ, ㅛ, ㅠ, ㅒ, ㅖ
    • ㅘ, ㅙ, ㅚ, ㅞ, ㅝ, ㅟ, ㅢ

  • ✱ I divide them by actual sounds, based on what Korean people actually pronounce them.

ㄹ. 8 Single Vowels: ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅗ, ㅜ, ㅐ, ㅔ, ㅡ, ㅣ

  • ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅗ, ㅜ, ㅐ, ㅔ, ㅡ, ㅣ
  • Pay attention to the pronunciation [ㅐ ≑ ㅔ]
    • , ‘’ and ‘’ have similar sounds. But when you write, you have to differentiate them.

  • (※ [ ] indicates the pronunciation.)

Today we've learned Korean alphabets '한글 (Hangeul)' and 8 single vowels.
